February Newsletter

Counseling Topics:

This month, our whole group guidance lesson is on Cultural Diversity.  I am reading the book The Colors of Us, and we are discussing individual differences.

In the book, we find out that we are all a shade of brown, and we all have the same feelings on the inside.  Therefore, we must treat everyone the same and abide by the “Golden Rule”— Treat others the way you would want to be treated.

Talk to your child about  how they might treat others with respect.

February is also Dental Health Month.  We will discuss the importance of keeping our teeth and gums healthy.  We will learn how to brush and floss our teeth correctly.  We will learn what to eat  and what not to eat to ensure healthy teeth and gums.  We will also discuss the importance of visiting a dentist on a regular basis.

Character Word Focus:  Fairness and Honesty
Fairness– treat others with equanimity and impartiality
Honesty– truthful, sincere, and straightforward

One Coat Campaign

One Coat Campaign

A partnership between East Alabama Medical Center, Auburn University Medical Clinic, Health Plus Fitness Center, area schools and local organizations
                December 6-13, 2013

The

gift of

 one coat…

Is also a gift of hope.

Is a way to show you care.

Can make a lifelong impact.

Is like a hug, except it lasts longer.

Can put a smile on a tiny face.

May help someone ‘pay it forward.’

Gives gratitude an opportunity to shine.

Could be the best coat someone ever had.

Warms someone’s heart and soul.

Tells someone that they matter.

Warms the receiver’s body and the giver’s heart.

Could be a moment that someone never forgets.

Reminds us all that giving and receiving are both blessed.

Lets someone know that he or she has not been forgotten.

Can be a word of encouragement for someone who is struggling.

Can enable a family to spend more money on food or other essentials.

Connects us to each other.  – By Lee Wilkins

As you know, many people in the Lee County area are struggling through tough economic times.  The One Coat Campaign exists to help families who do not have adequate clothing for the winter months.  Our goal is that every person will stay warm this winter in Lee County.  This year, the focus of the campaign is to provide coats, jeans, socks, shoes and blankets for those in need in our community and surrounding communities.

Winston S. Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”  Are you willing to give?

We will be accepting coats (new & gently used), jeans (new & gently used), socks (new), shoes (new & gently used), and blankets (new) for adults and children. We ask that all items donated be clean, free from stains and damage.  During times of need, we are to put our best foot forward.

Items can be put in the box located in each pod.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Shelia Daniel at 887-4953.

December Newsletter

Counseling Topics:

This month, our whole group guidance lesson is on being generous.   We are learning what it means to be generous. When we do things to help people because we want to, we are being generous.
We are writing, illustrating, and sharing about how we have been or could be generous to others.
We can be kind to others by making a card, giving  flowers, reading a book, smiling, cleaning up, doing a favor, and/or saving money for a special cause.
Ask your child about ways they can be generous to others and let them share with you.

A Sincere Thanks to All

I want to thank you all for you willingness to participate in Red Ribbon Week and the Beat Bama Food Drive.  Thank you for all the cans  you sent in.  There were picked up by the East Alabama Food Bank and will be greatly appreciated by many.

AEEC's One Coat Campaign Service Project:

We will be collecting coats, jackets, mittens, gloves, scarves, and hats.  If you have any of these gently worn articles of clothing at home that you would like to send in to donate or if you want to purchase new items, please send them in.

Monthly Character Word Focus:

Generosity-kindness: willingness to give money, help, or time freely.  Talk to your child about being generous.  Each student will have an opportunity to be generous by sending in new and/or gently worn winter items (coats, jackets, mittens and /or gloves) during the week of December 9-13.   The focus of the campaign is to provide winter items to those in need in our community and surrounding communities as the winter season approaches.  All donations will be sent to the One Coat Campaign.

Feel free to contact me any time with questions and/or comments.  I will do whatever I can to help your child have a positive experience at AEEC.
