November Newsletter

In October, the guidance lesson was on making healthy choices.  I read Mariko Wears Her Thinking Cap.  We discussed ways to be healthy: eating healthy foods, exercising, getting plenty of rest, and making wise decisions.
Please encourage your child to eat healthy, exercise, get plenty of rest and make wise decisions.
In November, I will be reading The Way I Feel and we will be discussing the importance of knowing how others feel so that we can respond to their feelings appropriately.  We will be identifying basic feelings and possible causes for those feelings, also.

Our character education word for the month is self-esteem/pride.  Have your child make a list of things they are good at and a list of things they like about themselves.

October Newsletter

In September, I read Miss Nelson is Missing.  We learned about the importance of being good listeners.  We discussed seven  good listening tips.  Our good listening tips are:  be quiet, hands in lap, look at speaker,  listen to speaker, sit criss-cross, sit still, and raise hand and wait patiently for your turn.  In order to learn,  you must be able to listen and observe what the speaker is saying and doing.

Counselor's Corner for September

Auburn Early Education Center's School Counseling and Guidance Program is a comprehensive, developmental, standards-based program promoting student competence and well-being.

Our Counseling and Guidance Program mission statement is...

Counselor's Corner

 Your Child’s School Counselor
     My name is Mrs. Shelia Daniel and I am very happy to be the school counselor at Auburn Early Education Center.  My family and I have lived in Auburn for fifteen years, but I am a native of Opelika.    I have four children of my own and two chocolate labs.  I love to spend time with my family, and in my spare time, I love to travel.
Education and Experience
     I earned my Bachelor’s degree at Auburn University in Elementary Education and my Master’s degree at Troy State University in School Counseling and Guidance.  I taught at Ogletree Elementary for seven of my twelve years of teaching before becoming a counselor.  This is my sixth year as counselor at Auburn Early Education Center.
Services
     I will provide AEEC with classroom guidance lessons and small group sessions on a variety of topics ranging from good citizenship, academic success, and career awareness to decision-making skills and understanding differences.  In addition to regular classroom guidance and small groups, I will provide students with individual counseling.  I will work collaboratively with teachers and parents to develop intervention strategies, classroom modifications, and action plans to help students be successful emotionally, socially, and academically.  I will work closely with community agencies to assist students and their families with special needs.
Referrals
     Parents and teachers may refer students for counseling services at school by contacting me.  Parents are always welcome to come by, call (887-4953), or e-mail (sdaniel@auburnschools.org).  Students may also tell their teachers that they would like to see me. 
Confidentiality
     School counselors are held to the same, strict confidentiality standards as other professional counselors.  Issues shared in a student and/or parent counseling session will remain confidential except for the following three cases: 
·         Students or parents threaten to hurt themselves.
·         Student or parent threatens to hurt someone else.
·         Student or parent reports being hurt or threatened by someone.

Counselor's May Newsletter

This month, our whole group guidance lesson is on Summer Safety.  We will discuss what it means to be safe around strangers, fire, and water.  We will play safety games on the Smart Board (www.CodeRedRover.org).

I will stress the importance of each student knowing his or her phone number and address.  Ask your child if he or she knows his or her phone number and address and if not, please take the time to help him or her learn them.
Thank you for allowing me  the opportunity to get to know your wonderful child.  Have a fun, safe summer!



Character Word Focus:
Friendship and Kindness-  To have a friend, you must be a friend.  Please discuss with your child the qualities of a good friendship:  caring, helpful, trustworthy, respectful, dependable, understanding, kind and be a good listener.
