August Newsletter

Counselor Introduction:

My name is Shelia Daniel and this is my seventh year as Auburn Early Education Center’s School Guidance Counselor.  I enjoy working with all the students and parents at AEEC.  As the counselor, I have the opportunity to work with the students in a variety of ways.  Students are served through large group, small group, and individual settings.  In large group settings, I go into the classroom once a month for 45 minutes and provide the students with an interactive, meaningful lesson such as:   Conflict Resolution, Making Healthy Choices, Gaining Responsibility, Understanding the Importance of Relationships, Accepting Differences, Cultural diversity, Identifying Feelings, Career Awareness, and Safety Awareness.

In small group settings, the students can be referred by teachers, parents, or themselves.  Students that have been referred with similar issues come to my classroom once a week for 30 minutes for six weeks and we play games and read books that deal with the issue at hand.  The parent will be informed when a student is referred for a small group or individual setting.

August Whole Group Lesson:
We compared the counselor to Mrs. Potato Head.  The counselor's eyes look out for you.  The
counselor's ears listen to your problems and feelings.  The counselor's hands and arm protect you and give you hugs.  The counselor's feet walk to wherever you are.  The counselor's mouth is used to talk to you when you have a problem.  The counselor has a bag of tools she can use to help you feel better and try to help you solve your problems too.

We discussed counselor confidentiality, also.  The counselor can keep secrets unless you are in danger or endangering others.

Character Education:
Our character focus for August is being responsible.  Please discuss with your
child about being responsible.
